The Supreme Court created a lot of hoopla when they recently announced the ban of diesel SUVs having engines more than 2.0-litres in capacity in Delhi. A lot of manufacturers cried foul because their SUVs had diesel engines that were above the allowed limit. Mahindra, not one to stay back and watch, started working on a downsized version of their 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine and here’s the result – the Scorpio and XUV500 now come with a 1.9-litre mHawk diesel engine.

The 2.2-litre oil-burner produces 120 HP of power and 280 Nm of torque in the Scorpio and 140 HP of power and 330 Nm of torque in the XUV500. The new downsized engine has no drop in power figures and it continues to boast of 120 HP and 140 HP on the Scorpio and XUV500 respectively. Mahindra, however, has not declared the torque figures for the downsized engine. However, kudos to them for coming up with the updated engine so quickly.

Mahindra claims that they started working on the downsized engine way back in August 2014, but we think that they started working on the engine just after the ban was announced. As of now, the updated engine will be available only in Delhi and NCR and there is no clarity whether the automaker will offer the engine in other cities or not.

The Scorpio and XUV500 are the highest selling Mahindra cars in urban markets and thus the ban would have affected the company by a considerable margin. It is great to see that such companies are showing seriousness for the auto market by making sure that their products are easily accessible to customers living anywhere across the country.
