Hyderabad: With Telugu-dubbed version of film ‘24’ is set to release in more than 400 theatres in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on May 6, trade circles are awaiting with bated breath of whether actor Surya would hit the bull’s eye and revive the waning craze for dubbed movies in the T-town.
Since Surya’s popularity among Telugu viewers is next to Rajinikanth the big budget extravaganza directed by Vikram Kumar (who made Telugu blockbuster Manam) has created lot of buzz in the T-town and the trailer has left Telugus awestruck. Surya’s popularity has been growing every day and has become a house-hold name in these two Telugu-speaking States.
With Surya’s riveting confidence, we are planning a big bang release in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh since it has a universal theme” said a source, close to Surya’s family in Chennai. A few years ago, Tamil-dubbed movies were considered a safe bet since Telugu producers and distributors used to make a fortune by buying each film for Rs 2 to 3 crore and make more than Rs 12 crore each.
But gradually stale storylines and routine action flicks, took the sheen out of dubbed movies. “It is true that dubbed movies took a beating since Telugu films stars are offering better films. Young heroes like Nani and Sharwanand are exploring novel themes, hence Telugu audience are betting their money on Telugu films, when compared to dubbed ones. It is true that sci-fi thriller 24 created hype.
I think besides Surya, director Vikram Kumar’s successful streak in Telugu has also been a big value addition for the movie” said director Ravi Chavali. Unmindful of poor response for K-town stars like Vijay (Police),Danush (Pandem Kodlu and Marian), Vishal’s (Pooja) and Jayam Ravi’s Yamapasam, producer Shobha Rani who released many dubbed movies defends, “Vikram’s ‘I’ was a blockbuster and Dhanush ‘Raghuvaran B Tech’ was also a money-spinner.
Hence fan following for Tamil stars is expanding in Telugu. Tamil stars like Surya, Vikram and Dhanush return in new avatars to keep up the element of surprise,” but adds that Tamil producers are quoting big prices.
