Narender, headmaster of the Mandal Parshad Primary School at Choutagadda Thanda in Gollapalli village belongs to this ilk. The school had just seven students on rolls when he was posted there in 2009. The school then lacked even basic amenities then; no compound wall and no water facility.
The headmaster, not the one to treat it as a closed chapter, plunged headlong into action. He discussed the crux of the issues with the local people. He then successfully convinced officials concerned regarding the requirements. With the help of some donors, initially a compound was constructed. Later, a borewell was sunk. He planted saplings that have since borne fruits, yielding flowers and giving shade. Now, the school looks pleasant with soothing greenery all over the campus.
The school’s strength has now increased to 37 students. The students’ contribution has resulted in the growth of 300 additional plants on the school premises. Rain water is being stored for watering the plants. The school walls are painted with various important action-oriented missions such as Swachh Bharath, lessons related to academics and pictures of inspiring personalities.
The headmaster had made it a habit to have mid-day meal along with his students. He has a soft spot for birds. Water and grains are placed in special bowls for birds. The school now has sanitary toilets. A person was employed to take care of the school and the plants during summer holidays. The man is being paid from the school funds.
In just eight years under the headmaster’s watch, the school has metamorphosed into a splendid, irresistible place. All of this attracted the attention of District Collector Ronald Rose. He too visited the school and lauded the efforts of Narender. Students gush while extolling their school. They are extremely happy with the place where they are learning wonderful things so much so that they are reluctant to stay away from the school even on Sundays. They say they are filled with utmost joy because of the school’s excellent atmosphere.
