Police seized 7 kg gold ornaments and Rs 13.42 lakh in cash from his possession.

The accused, identified as Ashok Sharma, 25, a native of Saheb Gunj mandal of Jharkhand, was moving around at the bus station suspiciously when he was caught by the Afzalgunj Police, Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma said at a press meet on Monday.

Meanwhile, based on a complaint lodged by Muthoot Finance management on Monday morning, Medak SP G Vijay Kumar, Sangareddy DSP G Venkatesh and Zaheerabad CI P Narender visited the spot of robbery. A dog squad and clues teams were pressed into service.

Police found several security lapses, which pulled off the brazen robbery, and charged the management with not adhering to safety procedures.

“The culprits scaled the shop from the rear side and made entry by cutting a window with the help of a gas cutter. Soon after entering, the thieves damaged all CCTV cameras installed in the office,” the police said.

Muthoot Finance manager Venkateshwarlu clarified to the baffled customers that the bank was insured against losses from robberies and need not to be worried.

According to Hyderabad police, the accused Ashok tried to run away when the police team was making enquiries but the police managed to catch him after a brief while. The police found as many as 499 envelope covers containing gold items having stickers of Muthoot Super Loan of Zaheerabad branch and also containing details of depositors along with other details besides cash of Rs 13.42 lakh."

On interrogation, Ashok revealed that one Kamru of West Bengal, who had called him to Hyderabad for work, had handed him over this bag at Nampally Railway Station on Monday morning and informed him that it was stolen property and instructed him to bring the same to the bus station, the police officials said.

"It appears that the seized property seems to have been stolen from Muthoot Finance branch in Zaheerabad during the intervening night of February 2 and 3. Ashok claims he is not involved in the theft. We have informed the Zaheerabad Police in this regard and they will be taking up further investigation. A manhunt has been launched to nab Kamru, who is still at large," Commissioner Anurag Sharma said. A case has been registered against Ashok under Section 411 (Receiving or retaining stolen property) of the IPC.
