Woman’s suicide bid as lover seeks dowry

Karimnagar: A woman of Gattubutkur, in Gangadhar mandal, Kalpana (22) allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison on Saturday after her lover, Shankar (27), refused to marry unless given dowry. They have been in love for three years.

She was in a coma in hospital. He allegedly demanded Rs.3.5 lakh as dowry, when she asked Shankar when the marriage would take place. She had explained that her family could not afford the amount as it spent for treatment of her father’s kidney ailment. This caused distress to Kalpana, forcing her to resort to a suicide bid.
