Hyderabad: A woman was robbed of her gold jewellery, cellphone and ATM card by an unidentified person after he terrorised her with a gun inside an ATM in Yosufguda on Wednesday.Around 7.45 am 25-year-old Srilalitha working for a BPO, who stays in a working women’s hostel in Madhura Nagar, went to the State Bank ATM at Yousufguda to withdraw money. The ATM did not have any security guard.
Just as she finished using the machine, a man, with his face covered, accosted her demanding handing over cash and jewellery. When she didn't, he pulled out a gun and fired at the wall. Shocked Srilalitha shared her PIN code with him before he grabbed her gold chain, earrings, mobile phone and her ATM card, and raced away on a two-wheeler.
Less than an hour later, the woman, working with a software firm, received a text message informing her that Rs 2,500 had been withdrawn from her account. Police say that CCTV footage and the SMS sent after he used Srilalitha's card will help locate him.
The woman, of Vizianagaram in AP, told SR Nagar police in her complaint that the attacker was aged around 22-25 years, spoke in Telugu and pointed a pistol at her.On receipt of the information, DCP (West) A Venkateshwar Rao visited the spot and took stock of the situation. He said a country-made weapon was used in the crime. The DCP said that three special teams have been formed to identify and nab the robber.
Despite clear guidelines and repeated instructions by the RBI to strengthen the security at ATMs, the banks have failed to ensure security in place. Recently, an inter-state ATM robbery gang entered an unguarded Canara Bank ATM at Safilguda, and fled with cash. Similarly, a couple of months ago unidentified persons made an unsuccessful attempt to steal cash from Axis Bank ATM at Chaitanya Bharati College complex under Chandanagar police limits which again was not manned by a security guard.
Lack of coordination between the police and the bank officials has resulted in a flurry of such incidents. Each one is passing the buck blaming others for negligence. Meetings in the past were held between bank managers and police and letters were also written to the head offices for manning the ATMs with guards, but thefts continue unabated.
One-third of city ATMs does not have guards. The banks are providing security guards only at machines perceived to be in high-risk areas, according to sources. However, even those guards do not have arms.
