Hyderabad: A cook, a mason and a daily labourer, who were childhood friends from a small village in Anaparti mandal, near Rajahmundry, had dreamt of becoming rich overnight and took to crime. They ended up behind bars. The Hyderabad City Police on Saturday confirmed the involvement of three persons hailing from East Godavari district in the abduction and murder of a 15-year-old Abhay Modani from Katedan.

Two of the accused were picked up near Rajahmundry and one was captured near Andhra Odisha border, said police sources. The accused were identified as Shiva, Sai and Raju, all in their early twenties. Shiva is a mason, Sai a cook and Raju a daily labourer.

The accused trio wanted to be rich and dreamt of having a lavish lifestyle. On learning about the high financial status of Abhay’s father, they abducted the boy for ransom. “Their plan was not to release Abhay, but kill him as the boy could identify them. It was a game of chance for them (accused) and were well prepared to kill Abhay, even if they received money,” said sources.

Sources said after killing Abhay, the trio tried in vain to secure ransom money. Then they fled in a train. Investigation is on to find whether anyone from city or anyone in Abhay’s family helped the accused. The police said the accused are likely to be remanded in judicial custody on Sunday.
