Pulkal (Medak): A tenant farmer with mounting debts taken from private money lenders found himself in a helpless situation as the crops withered away due to drought and resorted to the extreme step of committing suicide. This tragic incident happened in Medak on Thursday.

Bhanoth Humla (50), a resident of Minpur Thanda (hamlet) of Minpur gram panchayat has been a tenant farmer from many years, as he owned very little land of his own. He used to cultivate anywhere between 10-15 acres by taking land on lease from village landlords.

Due to drought conditions, his farming has been running into losses for a couple of years. He had taken Rs 5 lakh from private money lenders last year for cultivating sugarcane and paddy in the water-rich Manjira backwater area. Everything seemed to be going well for him, until the district administration had decided to remove all motors from the back waters so that water could be used only for drinking water purposes.

The loan amount with interest reached Rs 10 lakh. Left in a helpless situation, he went to his farm on Thursday early morning and hanged himself to a tree. Pulkal ASI Prabhakar has filed a case and is investigating. He is survived by three daughters and two sons.
