603 motorists imprisoned for drunken driving

​Hyderabad: As many as 603 motorists in Hyderabad were imprisoned by the local courts on Wednesday for indulging in drunken driving. The accused were also imposed with a penalty of Rs 26.98 lakh by the courts.

In a press note, Additional Commissioner (traffic) Jitender said that as many as 1,567 motorists were caught during enforcement drives conducted by the traffic police at various police stations in May. They were all counselled at the Traffic Training Institute and produced in the courts concerned.

The third and fourth metropolitan courts imprisoned 11 persons for 10 days, two persons for seven days, six for five days, eight for four days, 34 for three days, 95 for two days and 74 persons for one day.

The courts also imprisoned 373 motorists till the rising of the court and they were also told to do social service for two hours in a day under police supervision, the Additional Commissioner said.

The officer also said that since January 2016, as many as 6,551 persons were caught for drunken driving among which 2,583 persons were imprisoned by the courts.
