Hyderabad: The Jubilee Hills police have taken into custody a journalist working for a TV channel for his involvement in a case of alleged kidnap and extortion of a businessman in Hyderabad. The Jubilee Hills police said six more members were yet to be nabbed in the case.

According to the Jubilee Hills police, about seven persons impersonating as policemen and journalists from Studio 9 television channel, approached one K Srinivasa Rao, a businessman living in Sri Krishna Nagar on May 31 and searched his house threatening him that several cases were booked against him for human trafficking. They took away Rs 10,800 from his house.

The police said the accused then kidnapped Rao, took him to Chintal area in a car and demanded Rs 2 lakh from him. When Rao told them he does not have that much money, they threatened to kill him and kept him in their custody. He however escaped from them on the same night.

He lodged a complaint with the police on Saturday after one of the gang members again came to his house and threatened to kill him if money was not paid, said Jubilee Hills inspector S Venkat Reddy, adding that the victim confessed that he was running a brothel earlier but now he was doing some small-time business.

“Complainant Rao named six suspects. One among them who is working as a journalist for a TV channel in Hyderabad has been taken into custody for questioning while the hunt is on to nab others. A case has been registered under charges of kidnapping and extortion by threatening for probe,” the inspector said.
