Basavatarakam Cancer hospital to start diploma in Oncology Nursing
The Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute (BIACH) is going to introduce a Diploma in Oncology Nursing starting this academic year. The specialized course is being started with an aim to equip nurses working in cancer hospitals.
Hyderabad: The Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute (BIACH) is going to introduce a Diploma in Oncology Nursing starting this academic year. The specialized course is being started with an aim to equip nurses working in cancer hospitals.
Dr Kalpana Raghunath, medical superintendent, (Academic) said, “Permission from Indian Nursing Council has already come and the permission from the Local Nursing Council is awaited.” She further added, “The BIACH has world class doctors but there is a need for good support staff and qualified nurses in handling chemotherapy drugs.” She was speaking at a one-day seminar on ‘Chemotherapy-Nurse’s role’ as part of the academic activities.
This is the first time that a diploma course in Oncology Nursing is offered in Telangana State. Post Basic Diploma in Oncology Nursing is offered in ASIMS College of Nursing, Indore and Apollo College of Nursing, Chennai. Similar courses are offered in half-a-dozen other states in the country. The Indo American School of Nursing and Indo American College of Nursing are two affiliate educational institutions run by the Nandamuri Basavatarakam Memorial Cancer Foundation to provide nursing education.
About 300 nurses including students and practicing nurses took part in the seminar. Dr M V T Krishna Mohan, consultant medical oncologist said, “It was paramount for nurses working in cancer hospitals to understand the various stages of cancer, administration of chemotherapy drugs and safety measures. Nurses need to be protected while constituting a drug.”
Earlier, D Vidyavathi, registrar, Telangana State Nurses and Midwives Council who was the chief guest urged nurses to be abreast of the latest technological advancements in the field of medical science. She also asked them to follow specified protocols during the administering of chemotherapy drugs. Chemotherapy drugs may pose a threat to nurses if they do not follow precautions.
The long-term effects to nurses who do not take enough precaution could lead to hair loss, liver damage and skin rash.
Dr Ch Satyanarayana, COO, BIACH &RI, T S Rao, medical director, BIACH&RI, Dr Senthil Rajappa, HOD, Medical Oncology and other doctors took part in the seminar.
