The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) Cantonment depot, observed the 25th Road Safety Week from January 20 to 26. Various programmes were conducted in the past one week to highlight the safety of the people and to reduce the number of accidents.

The programme was attended by G Surendra Babu, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), A Koteshwar Rao, executive director, Greater Hyderabad Zone and Hyderabad Zone and other staff members.

G Surendra Babu, chief guest, said, “Road safety requires a multipronged endeavour from various stakeholders like the transport sector, highway engineers, police, health sector, insurance sector, automobile manufacturers, legal sector, civic agencies, educational institutions, NGOs and the community at large. A collective effort would make a significant impact on the number of road accidents and help mitigate the scourge of road accident related deaths and injuries.”

He appealed to all the stake holders to join hands with the government in its efforts to make roads safer and to develop a sustainable road transport system across the country.

Surendra further added, “The RTC drivers should not compare themselves with other transport operators such as lorry, taxi, private buses drivers and others, who are not from the organised sector like the APSRTC. The employees of the APSRTC are well-trained and are provided with secure jobs. Counselling is provided from time to time for drivers who do not perform as expected. Higher amount of penalty would definitely reduce the number of accidents.”

A Koteshar Rao, executive director, said, “The figures of the accidents compared to the last year are the same. There is an urgent need to reduce the number of accidents, which would definitely reduce the accident rate.”

The drivers who put up more than 25 years without a single accident case were felicitated and awarded with commendation letter. M Sudershan, a driver of Kushaiguda depot with a service record of 29.5 years without a single accident was honoured at the event.
