Celebrations broke out in the city as news of the Lok Sabha passing the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill, paving the way for the creation of Telangana, trickled in.
A festive atmosphere prevailed in Hyderabad and in areas like Warangal and Karimnagar, with the separate statehood supporters bursting crackers, distributing sweets and taking out victory rallies. They danced to the tunes of popular songs hailing Telangana.
A large number of students gathered at the Osmania University, the nerve-centre of the separate statehood agitation, and burst crackers and revelled in joy. Congress activists at some places in Telangana rejoiced by distributing sweets and by holding pictures showing their party president Sonia Gandhi in the image of 'Telangana Talli' (Telangana mother).
"Greetings to Telangana people. This is the result of a long struggle. The Bill would be passed in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. We thank Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, CPI General Secretary Sudhakar Reddy and each one of those who supported the separate Telangana Bill. We are actually at a loss for words to express our joy," said M Kodandaram, chairman, Telangana Joint Action Committee.
