Mayor quitting, Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain, chieftain Asaduddin Owaisi, Botcha Satyanarayana. It was expected that the Mayor would tender his resignation on Thursday itself but had differed until Asaduddin Owaisi’s announcement on pre-poll alliances.
• Majid Hussain likely to contest as AIMIM candidate from Sec’bad LS seat
• AIMIM relinquishes Deputy Mayor’s post too
• Congress not likely to nominate Mayor
• Commissioner Somesh Kumar to be in-charge
Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain is likely to relinquish his post by Monday. All India Majlis Ittehadul-e-Muslimeen (AIMIM) party sources said that party chieftain Asaduddin Owaisi spoke to Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Botcha Satyanarayana and confirmed that Majid Hussian would resign. It was also reported that the AIMIM was forgoing the post of deputy mayor as it was severing all ties with the Congress party.
There were reports emerging from the AIMIM camp that Majid Hussain was resigning in order to contest for the Lok Sabha elections from the Secunderabad seat. Both Asaduddin and Akbaruddin Owaisi had, reportedly, finalised the candidature of Majid Hussain and decided to field him from the Secunderabad Parliamentary constituency.
It was expected that the Mayor would tender his resignation on Thursday itself but had differed until Asaduddin Owaisi’s announcement on pre-poll alliances.
Congress sources said that post Majid Hussian’s resignation no one would take up the post and that the party might ask GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar to take up the administration of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
The resignation saga
There was uncertainty doing the rounds as to who would be the next first citizen of the city from the Congress party. The transition of power was supposed to take place by January 3 but was delayed. The reason was that there were too many aspirants from the Congress for the post besides the reigning political imbroglio over Telangana. Though the Congress was supposed to decide on the Mayors’ post a month in advance, Pradesh Congress Committee chief Botsa Satyanarayana was deeply involved in the state bifurcation issue for the past few months.
Both the Congress and the AIMIM had entered into an agreement after the civic polls held in November 2009 on sharing the Mayor’s post. As per the agreement, the Congress candidate would hold the Mayor’s post for the first two years followed by the MIM for the next two years. The last one year again was supposed to be taken up by a Congress nominee. The deputy mayor’s post was decided to go to the other party during that period.
Banda Karthika Reddy, Tarnaka corporator, served as the Mayor for two years and subsequently MIM corporator from Ahmed Nagar, Mohd Majid Hussain, took over as Mayor in January 2012.
