Do not be surprised if you find more children as well as adults sport the Modi kurta this Independence Day
The dozen shops in Khairtabad area which used to be full of spotless white kurtas and Gandhi topis now have another addition: the Modi kurta.
“The cotton kurtas have become the most sought after in the last three months. There is a huge demand even for children’s sizes. We have been seeing a steady increase in the sales after the general elections. In the last three days we have sold quite a few of the Modi kurtas,” says P Vinod Kumar of Bharat Khadi Bhavan at Khairtabad.
The white kurta and the Gandhi topi, the quintessential attire for all politicians before the Independence Day is slowly losing out to the Modi kurta.
Gyaneshwar of Andhra Khadi Centre says, “After the fall in the real-estate business and post bifurcation, khadi sales have hit an all-time low. But thanks to the rise of the Modi kurta, even the youth are now turning towards cotton and khadi.”
Tricolour sales not encouraging
The shop owners are complaining that the Tricolour sales have been slow and not to the desired level. A flag of size 4/6 costs Rs 2,100, while 2/3 is priced Rs 1,700. The 6/9 flags for all four wheelers cost Rs 140.
While several shops in the Khairtabad area make brisk business before Independence Day, a few shops that were demolished for road widening have had to keep away from sales.
A lone sales boy was seen selling flags outside the demolished shop.
