When it comes to Vijayawada, Kowtha Purnananda Vilas Dharma Satram has been serving as an address of artistes for the past five decades. At 6 pm sharp, harmonium music can be heard from a room in the choultry everyday. It indicates that upcoming artistes are practicing verses from a drama. The satram is the birthplace of many excellent plays and dramas. Many legendary theatre artistes sharpened their skills here.

According to historical records, the construction of the choultry was taken up way back in 1923. It took three years for the completion of the choultry. The aim was to provide accommodation to people visiting Vijayawada in the olden days and promote Vedic culture and traditional arts.The management of Kowtha Purnananda Vilas Dharma Satram organises ‘Veda Vidwan Sabha’ under a giant tree during Navaratri ever year. The Sabha attracts eminent Vedic scholars.

The satram trustees felicitate the participants of Veda Vidwan Sabha. Apart from organising ‘Arsha Dharma’ activities, the management also promotes the rich cultural heritage of the city. The choultry is living up to its ideals even in these days, where everything has become commercial.In the early 60s, there were many noted cultural organisations like Rasana Samakhya, Arunodaya Natyamandali, Venkata Kanaka Durga Natya Mandali, Kalabharathi, Sumadhura Kala Niketan and Sai Baba Natya Mandali, which used the choultry for their cultural activities.

Many eminent stage artistes K Venkateswara Rao, Raja Babu, Potti Prasad, Sutti Veerabhadra Rao, Jandhyala, AVS, GSR Murthy, Sivarami Reddy, Achanta, Savitri, Annapurna and Siva Parvathi and others rehearsed at the choultry. GSR Murthy Memorial Nataka Parishad, KS Murthy Memorial Nataka Kala Parishad, Hasya Parishad and Maheswari Prasad Comedy Club are some of the cultural organisations that are using the choultry for accommodation and rehearsals during drama contests and cultural festivals in the city.

Kowtha Venkata Subbarao, whose father Purnanandam served as a president of Sumadhura Kala Niketan for about 25 years, and a trustee of the choultry, said, “The choultry is having cordial relations with artistes and cultural organisations since its inception. It is extending all possible help to artistes and cultural associations as part of its endeavour to promote stage art. We have plans to construct a Kalyana Mandapam on the choultry premises for the benefit of the common people.”
