City to get 2nd Happy Street. Buoyed by the tremendous response from people to its Happy Street green project at Guru Nanak Colony, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is planning to replicate the initiative at Gulabi Thota.
The 1.3 km road at Gulabi Thota will be developed as the second Happy Street. Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) has approached the VMC, evincing interest in the green project. RJIL has expressed its readiness to develop walking and cycling tracks and provide 4G and WiFi connectivity if it is allowed to be part of the project. A decision on the RJIL offer will be taken soon
Buoyed by the tremendous response from people to its Happy Street green project at Guru Nanak Colony, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is planning to replicate the initiative at Gulabi Thota. The entire 1.3 km road up to Autonagar will be covered with greenery as part of the project.
Development of walking and cycling tracks are also part of it. The project works are going on at a brisk pace. Speaking to The Hans India, Municipal Commissioner G Veerapandian said, “The VMC has decided to take up the Happy Street project in other parts of Vijayawada in a phased manner to develop it as a green city.

Updating on the progress of the project, he said, “As of now, the ground work has been completed at Gulabi Thota. The road development works will be taken up after the completion of the project survey. It has also been proposed to develop the road from Government Press at Mutyalampadu to Pasupu Thota as a Happy Street, which will be the third in the city.”
Meanwhile, residents of Gulabi Thota area have welcomed the VMC proposal to develop the road as a Happy Street. “The project will ensure that all the encroachments and other hurdles on the road are cleared. The development of footpaths and cycling tracks will facilitate smooth flow of vehicular traffic.
The ease of traffic congestion on the road will make people in the area really happy,’’ said K Naveen Kumar, a resident. The green project was taken up on Guru Nanak Colony Road at an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore. Don Bosco Public School came forward to finance the green project.
