Dead trees in the Secunderabad Cantonment are posing a danger to denizens. According to a survey conducted by social activists there are close to 50 old termite infested dead trees in the cantonment.

The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) chops down dead trees on request from citizens but it is alleged that the board officials have not taken up removal of trees for the past six months. Jetty Umeshwar Rao, social activist says, “The termite infested dead tree beside the main gate of Kendriya Vidyalaya School, Picket, stands precariously and could fall anytime.

High tension wires and cables passing just above and beneath the branches pose danger to people.” Auto rickshaw drivers who drop and pick up students say that they informed the school management but no action is taken. School authorities say that it is the duty of the SCB to pull down the tree before any untoward incident takes place.

Rakesh, a resident of Lal Bazaar, says, “There are several dead trees on the road leading to All Saint’s Church. Thousands of vehicles pass through the area and if the tree collapses during nighttime it could be disastrous. There is hardly any light at night.”

Umeshwar Rao said that he had first given a complaint on July 23 but there has been no response. “Dead trees do not have commercial value, may be that is the reason the SCB is not interested.”
