The International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) was celebrated at People’s Plaza, Necklace Road on Thursday involving schoolchildren of Meridian School and elders from the old age home, HelpAge India.

The International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) was celebrated at People’s Plaza, Necklace Road on Thursday involving schoolchildren of Meridian School and elders from the old age home, HelpAge India.

As part of the celebrations, elderly people of HelpAge India were facilitated at the event, which continued with a Walkathon from People’s Plaza involving schoolchildren with slogans like ‘Elders are treasures’ and ‘Respect elders’.

Activities were oganised to commemorate the day and highlight the importance and contribution of India’s senior citizens to society.

Subhakar, senior manager with HelpAge India said, “Apart from what we are holding today, we also conduct various programmes at schools to educate children about the importance and care they should give towards elderly people.”

“The elderly who are not being cared for after their children acquire parental property can call this toll free number 1253, through which further action can be taken,” added Subhakar.

President of Sr Citizens Association of Kapra municipality, G Nageswara Rao spoke at the event and advised the youth to respect elders and stop abusing them.

The other guests at the event were Vijay Babu, President LB Nagar Sr citizens association, Booma Reddy, Editor for voice of Sr citizens and Rajitha in charge of social activity, Meridian School.
