Cycling and walking tracks to come up along the lake

People in Hyderabad would soon be able to cycle, jog and take a stroll along the periphery of Gandipet Lake. The Telangana government is planning to develop a walking and cycling track along the bund of the famous lake, which is the major source of drinking water for the city.

The initiative comes as part of the ‘Save Gandipet project’ aimed at stopping encroachments. The government is of the view that by developing these tracks it will provide the recreation starved populace a much needed space and would also act as a deterrent to land grabbers.

Over the years Gandipet Lake has shrunk considerably. Built in 1920 during the reign of the last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, it acted as a major tourist destination. To revive the lake to its past glory, the irrigation department in association with Metropolitan Water Board, revenue and police wings zeroed in on community policing and hence, the decision to make it a recreational centre.

Authorities are now fixing FTL limits for the lake spread over 47 km and thus far identified 108 structures that were illegally built.

According to Cyberabad Police Commissioner CV Anand, who is overseeing the initiative, “Save Gandipet Lake” would be taken up in different phases. Once FTL marking is over, a 10 km stretch of the lake would be developed initially. Cycling and walking tracks would be constructed side by side. Once this is finished, the next stretch would be developed.”

The top cop has an emotional connect with the lake having spent his childhood and major part of his life here. He pointed out that the entire cost of the project would be between Rs 35 to 40 crore. Anand informed that they are expecting funds from various quarters including abroad for this initiative; it was brought under the Mission Kakatiya that has a separate account to accept donations.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that government is keen on seeking film industry help for the project. A charity cricket match is likely to be organised in the coming months. Funds collected would directly go into the ‘Save Gandipet Lake’ account.

After the first phase of the Gandipet Lake development, authorities will shift focus towards transforming Himayat Sagar into a recreational centre.
