The three-day conference on ‘Neurogenic Communication Disorder in Adults’ concluded on Sunday. With a focus to enhance and update the skills and knowledge of professionals in the field of speech language pathology and audiology, the Conference had medical professionals, speech language pathologists and Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation teams from pan-India sharing their knowledge and experience on the matter.

Speaking at the event, MD and CEO of KIMS Hospitals Dr B Bhaskar Rao said, “The ability to speak and swallow is much more vital for a good quality of life than we realise. Sometimes, accidents or diseases damage neurons in the brain that control this ability. At KIMS Hospitals, we have the Department of Speaking and Swallowing Disorders, to help people on journey to get their voice back.”

Dr Shiva Shankar, HOD and Professor of Dept of Speech Language pathology and Audiology, NIMHANS in Bengaluru was also present. Neurological conditions like paralysis, traumatic brain injury, dementia and Parkinson’s can lead to communications and swallowing problems if the specific part of the brain is damaged.

Dr S Phaneedhar Reddy, Consultant, Department of Speaking and Swallowing Disorders from the organising committee commented, “Medication or surgery may improve the overall status of such patients, but not the ability to communicate; that has to be relearned.

A customised treatment from a speech language pathologist or speaking and swallowing specialised doctor has improved the communication and swallowing ability in patients." The event was jointly organised by KIMS Hospitals, Hyderabad and NIEPMD (National Institute of Empowerment of persons with Multiple Disabilities), Chennai.
