Adilabad: Apple-lovers can have their favourite fruit nearer home. They need not wait for the delicious fruit which is grown in far off places like Himachal Pradesh or Jammu and Kashmir, as an Adilabad farmer in Danora village in Keramori mandal is raising them as the weather is similar to that prevailing in Shimla.
Usually, farmers think that no other crop can be grown in the backward Adilabad district except cotton. But progressive farmer Balaji has proved to be different and special, making experiments right from his early days, although initially raising cotton. But when it brought him losses, Balaji was smart enough to realise that 30 degrees Celsius in summer was ideal for growing apples.
At the beginning, as an experiment, he planted ten apple plants in an area spread over 30 guntas, using organic fertiliser. Now four months old and finding the plants’ growth more than expected with the night temperature ranging from three and seven degrees Celsius, Balaji increased the apple crop area to two more acres.
Simultaneously, he is smart enough to raise other fruit plants like mosambi, pomegranate, mango and fruit lime. He is able to earn Rs 5 lakh a year. He estimates that if only apple crop is successfully raised in more area there is good scope for very high income thanks to the suitable weather conditions in Danora.
Scientists of Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) are conducting research on the apple growth prospects in the village. Balaji told The Hans India that such high income can ensure that the financial status of farmers will be far better.
He is confident of high yield of apple in the village because of the suitable rainfall and weather conditions. Even if there is lower crop, he still sounds confident. This is making other farmers take up apple cultivation, following the example set by Balaji.
