A female Asiatic elephant, Sita aged about 33 years, was rescued from the Jamuna Circus on Wednesday. After receiving a complaint from the People for Animals Society, Hyderabad, against the circus regarding performing the shows with animals and birds March 1, the Additional Magistrate of Shadnagar Court passed orders to the Police Department to seize all the animals that included elephants, horses, dogs and birds.

Sita has been taken to the Zoo Park for safe custody as she is a wild animal and comes under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Sita had a wound in its fore foot for which the Zoo veterinarians are giving treatment. It is providing her a feed that includes 200 kg of para grass, 50 kg of peepal leaves, 50 kg Thunga grass, 3 kg bananas, 2 Kg of cooked Ragishaw, 10-15 kg of sugarcane and 250 l of drinking water as prescribed by the veterinarians.

Until further orders from the Court, Sita will be kept in Zoo custody. The other animals were returned as they are domesticated and may have infectious diseases, which may be transmitted to the zoo animals; in addition the guidelines given by Central Zoo Authority do not permit housing of domesticated animals.
