Bhupalpalli: The farmers, who cultivated fine quality rice in Govindaraopet mandal in the district, have demanded the State government setting up of special counters to procure the produce.

Under the aegis of a local farmers’ committee, the farmers have been staging protests for the past two days in support of their demand. An indefinite hunger strike by a farmer, Tummmala Haribabu has entered second day on Tuesday.

In support of the farmer, who was on hunger strike and seeking to fulfil the demand, nearly 200 farmers and their family members have staged a rasta-roko at the mandal headquarters on the day.

About 80 per cent of the farmers in the mandal cultivate fine quality paddy, 50 per cent of which would be sold as seed.

The seed traders fixed the price at Rs 1,770 per quintal while the farmers demanded Rs 2,100 per quintal of paddy.

The farmers complained that an order by the government directing the rice millers to pay Rs 1,800 per quintal of paddy was not being implemented.

The farmers committee demanded that immediate steps should be taken to set up procurement centre at Govindaraopet.

Mulug Sub-Collector VP Gautham visited the spot and promised them to address the issue within two days by taking it to the notice of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.
