Jagtial: Both farmers and agricultural department officials are busy preparing for Kharif season with the beginning of monsoon showers in several areas in Jagtial district.

In fact the farmers are waiting for the rains as they have already kept their lands ready for cultivation. The district has received scattered rains in the last two days. According to the Met officials heavy rain is expected within a week, which would enable the farmers to take up sowing extensively.

During the last season, farmers grew various crops in about 2.45 lakh acres in the district. Out of which, paddy was grown in about 1.35 lakh acres, minor cereals in 61,000 acres, cotton in 26,000 acres and pulses in 19,000 acres along with other crops.

The officials have estimated that during this Kharif season farmers may cultivate crops in about 2.57 lakh acres, nearly 12,000 acres more compared to previous year.

Agricultural department officials explained the farmers about crops suitable for their lands by conducting various awareness programmes.

The officials conducted a survey to get information from the farmers like their name, caste, Aadhar card number, bank account, mobile number, land survey number, soil testing certificates, their method of cultivation and others.

The farmers also actively participated in the survey and gave details keeping in view of the government assurance of giving Rs 4,000 per acre to the farmers to purchase fertilisers along with distribution of seeds on subsidy.

The officials were taking all necessary steps to arrange required quantities of seeds and fertilisers for distribution to farmers during this Kharif season.

According to the officials’ estimation, nearly 39,500 metric tons seeds were required for paddy and 6,500 metric tons for minor cereals along with 18,000 metric tons for various types of pulses along with other crops.

Regarding fertilizers, nearly 15,529 metric tons nitrogen, 14,785 metric tons phosphorus and 6,707 metric tons of potassium were required for the present Kharif season along with 30,120 metric tons of urea and 8,082 metric tons DPA and 9,603 metric tons of complex fertilisers.

Agriculture Department Joint Director Bhagya Lakshmi said that the farmers, who attended awareness programmes and participated in programmes like ‘Mana Telangana - Mana Vyavasayam’ and in the official survey would be benefited with the schemes introduced by the government.

“There is a possibility of getting good yield by conducting soil test and its condition. Hence it is a must for every farmer to go for soil testing and get certificate from the officials concerned,” she informed.
