It has been 5 good years since Tata Motors India acquired Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). Now for the first time we will see both the companies jointly developing an SUV product for the Indian market and that is quite the thing to rejoice about. The new true-blue SUVs will be sold under Tata’s brand identity and this might help boost the company’s aspirational value.
In what could further galvanize the SUV market in India, one of the Tata SUVs with Land Rover technology will be priced at Rs.10-15 lakhs and is expected to make it to Indian roads by 2016. Notably, all the SUV’s that will be launched after 2015 will be full sized models, rather than compact sub -4 meter model. Tata Motors is likely to ask its vendors to start supplying components from the first quarter of 2015.
The specifics of the second SUV are not really clear but what we do know is the fact that both of these cars will come with top-notch quality as well as performance. “We will surprise everybody”, said one of the persons directly involved in the matter, as per the information available on the interweb. The people involved directly with the project declined to be named because they were not authorised to speak to the press.
Again as per the information available, Tata group’s then-chairman Ratan Tata told shareholders in Tata Motor’s 2010-11’s annual report that, “ while JLR and Tata Motors are looking to optimize the synergetic strengths between JLR and Tata Motors in India, an examination is also underway on joint engine development programme which would have manufacturing facilities both in the UK and India”.
The move is also likely to be seen as a drive against Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, which has snatched Tata’s leadership in utility vehicles and is doing pretty well with its acquisition of Ssangyong. We feel the input from Land Rover will be utilised to enhance the overall quality of the products. Tata Motors is looking to get back in the game with the launch of these two SUVs which are expected to be priced around the Rs 15 lakhs mark.
Be ready to see the Indian SUV market getting hotter by the years to come as this segment is growing leaps and bounds if we see the track record of past few years in India. Recently we reported Jeep is also working on its compact SUV for India while other global SUV makers are already doing well in India. Ford EcoSport and Renualt Duster are a common sight on Indian roads with Hyundai also bringing a compact SUV soon (as per many reports).
