Vento Cup 2015 started with 550 racing enthusiasts and now only 16 have made the final cut. Of the 16, two Hyderabadis Ishan Dodhiwala and Prabhanj Parachuri will compete in the finals. This year, there is an interesting twist to the race- one, Volkswagen Vento will replace Polo and two, six racers from the previous year’s Polo Cup will compete with the finalists. The six racers include another Hyderabadi Anindith Reddy who will make the race a little harder for the newcomers.
The debate among the racers revolves around the pros and cons of a hatchback vs sedan. “In last year’s edition we had practice sessions on old Volkswagens. So we have a hang on the machine and its limits and handling. It is a win-win situation for us,” said Anindith, who is a healthcare professional from the city. On the other hand Ishan feels that it would be a little comfortable if it was a race between hatchbacks and not sedans.
“While racing a hatchback, it becomes easy to overtake the opponent. A sedans size is always a drawback in rally racing,” feels Ishan, a social entrepreneur with The Indian Brand. However both the racers have a common observation; they say that Vento will offer better suspensions than Polo. All the cars will be tuned to push the same throttle in the race. So what’s the trick to win the race? Besides mental stability, Anindith feels that staying mentally active, being intuitive and not getting tensed are the keys to success.
“You may stand first in a lap and maybe overtaken in the next. You don’t have to panic and get tensed. If you do, the coordination between clutch, brake and accelerator will be lost, which will hamper your lap timing. Stay focused, be intuitive and push your vehicle to its limit,” opines Anindith. While pushing your vehicle to its limit, it is important to be safe and physically healthy. Ishan advises aspiring racers to keep safety as their top most priority.
“Taking risks is impressive but not at the cost of your life. Races are held in highly controlled conditions. We wear all the gear required, it is for our own safety,” shares Ishan. It is hot, extremely hot inside a race car and being physically fit is a quintessence to bear the heat and other adverse situations you can face while racing.
“During a race, the temperature inside the car goes as high as 50 degrees Celsius. Also, you start feeling dizzy and exhausted just after a few laps. It is very important to keep yourself physically fit. Your physical should be as good as that of your vehicle,” Anindith concludes.
