As part of the Ashada Bonalu Jatra at Ujjanini Mahankali Temple in Secunderabad, the procession of elephant named Rajini was a hugely popular with devotees.

The picture of Goddess Mahankali was carried atop the decorated elephant mounted by an archak and taken around the temple and and streets of Rastrapathi Road.

The procession was followed by “Potharajula Vinyasalu” and drum beating with dances performed by the devotees. It took about eight people to control the elephant and a veterinarian was available on the spot for timely availability in case of any emergecy.

Speaking about the elephant used in procession, the Assistant Director for veterinary and elephant doctor at the procession, Dr MA Hakeem said, “Its cost of maintenance per day is around Rs 50,000 including feeding and other miscellaneous expenses.

The 4,000 kg elephant eats 300 kg feed, drinks 250 litres of pure water per day and sleeps less than six hours. The approximate cost of this age and size of elephant is Rs 1 crore and a baby one’s is Rs 25 lakh.” Upto 250 devotees participated in the auspicious procession.
