Secunderabad: There seems to be no end to the road closure issue. Activists have submitted fresh letters to the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB), GOC and the Ministry of Defence to reopen the roads. The Federation of North Eastern Colonies of Secunderabad (FNECS) and Open Secunderabad Cantonment All Roads (OSCAR) have been submitting petitions for the reopening of roads in Secunderabad Cantonment.
In a latest letter submitted to the authorities on Tuesday, members of FNECS say, “In the minutes of the SCB meeting held on May 31, it mentions that only two roads were closed, whereas the actual number is much more.” C S Chandrashekar, secretary, FNECS says, “All roads were open to public for over a century before they were closed. Also the Army headquarters order directed for the submission of a report on the traffic movement but how can one get the accurate traffic statistics if the roads are still closed.”
Residents say that the jawans stop them and ask for id proof and insist on wearing helmets. S Chandrashekar of OSCAR asks, “Why is the LMA not following the instructions of the MoD? It clearly states that the district administration and the traffic police need to be kept in the loop but the LMA has till date not written to the district administration.”
He further added, “We appeal to PDDE to expedite the process and a special officer be given the task for a detailed inquiry and file the report.” According to persons in the know of things, the LMA is reluctant to bring down the walls at two places citing that there is no civilian habitation in the vicinity. The bone of contention though is that the LMA and the SCB insist that only two roads are closed, but activists say there are many.
Confusion looms
Some roads are still closed and in a few there are night as well as day restrictions. In a few areas, jawans ask for id verification and in others morning walkers are not allowed initially and later let inside. Suraj, a resident of Sainikpuri says, “If the LMA can specify clearly and announce what is in their mind, people would be relieved. There is too much confusion.”
Activists claim
Activists say that there are several roads that are still not open such as Cantonment Garden – Rajendra Sinhji Road, Barr Road, Golf Course - Lakdawala Road, Surender Marg (Eagle Chowk to Golf Course), Flagstaff Road (RSI Circle – to – Cariappa Road), RSI Circle - Ammuguda Road, TASA Circle – Rajiv Rahadari/Aurangabad Railway Line Road, Balaklava Road – Ammuguda/Batticaloa Circle Link Road, RA Lines Road - Wesley Church Road, Empress Road (All Saints Rd–Wesley Church), RA Lines Road, Service Road under R K Puram Flyover, Shivalayam Road and AOC Records – to - Ordinance Road.
