Hyderabad: Former Minister and Muslim leader Bashiruddin Babu Khan, 73, died at his residence here on Sunday following a prolonged illness. He is survived by a son and two daughters. As a former leader of the TDP, Khan served as a minister in the cabinets of NT Rama Rao and N Chandrababu Naidu where he held the portfolios of Higher Education, Major Industries, Tourism and Minorities Welfare.
He resigned as a minister in 1998 in Naidu’s regime and quit the TDP protesting the party’s support to BJP-led NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Since then, he has been associated with various organisations working for the upliftment of the Muslims on the educational front. He was elected as a member of the legislative assembly twice, in 1985 and 1994, from Nizamabad.
In a message, TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu condoled the death of Khan and expressed his deep sympathies to the bereaved family. He recalled the departed leader’s contribution to the party and his efforts to strengthen the TDP. His philanthropic services to the society were highly appreciable, he added.
