In a welcome development, and coming after a long while, a city hoopster has achieved national status. Although, Hyderabad is pretty active in basketball, including at the school level, a student making the national grade has eluded the fraternity. Amid the gloom, coming as a ray of hope is Shishir Vallapu Reddy, whose talent has won him a berth in the Indian squad.

Amid the gloom, coming as a ray of hope is Shishir Vallapu Reddy, whose talent has won him a berth in the Indian squad.

According to Manjula H from the Hyderabad District Basketball Association (HDBA), this is sweet music to all of them as a Hyderabad boy has got a long overdue national call. ‘Talent has been there all along but what was missing was recognition,’ she points out. Reddy is studying IX Grade in Oakridge International School at their Gachibowli Newton Campus.

India will be vying for honours in the 7th Asian School Basketball Under-18 Boys & Girls Championship-2015 at Chiang-Mai in Thailand. The event concludes on March 14. According to seasoned campaigner Norman Issac, ‘the boy is a gifted player who deserved this break. I hope he will grow in strength hereafter and seize the opportunity that has come his way.’
