CSIR-IICT scientists get Gandian award
Scientist Dr S Sridhar of the chemical engineering division of CSIR-IICT, Hyderabad, and his team members Siddhartha Moulik, YVL Ravikumar, M Madhumala and D Manjunath received the Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI) Appreciation Award at the Festival of Innovation in New Delhi recently.
Scientists clinch GYTI award
Scientist Dr S Sridhar of the chemical engineering division of CSIR-IICT, Hyderabad, and his team members Siddhartha Moulik, YVL Ravikumar, M Madhumala and D Manjunath received the Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI) Appreciation Award at the Festival of Innovation in New Delhi recently. The award was presented Dr RA Mashelkar, chairperson of National Innovation Foundation (NIF) to the team for their contribution towards ‘Development of membrane separation processes for industrial progress, societal benefit and environmental safety’.
The team’s innovation includes the design of highly compact pilot reverse osmosis/nanofiltration/ultrafiltration plants for purification of drinking water on a community level, the design of submerged hand pump operated ultrafiltration system for flood affected regions and portable hand operated device for travellers, development of Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) systems for treatment of industrial effluents, and the synthesis of novel membranes for separation of liquid mixtures by pervaporation.

The same group is well known for their earlier contributions to both rural welfare and industrial development through design and commissioning of several pilot plants for water purification, wastewater treatment, solvent recovery, gas purification and recovery of valuable chemicals through membrane technology.
The National Innovation Foundation (NIF), India, and Society for Research and Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies and Institutions (SRISTI) instituted the GYTI award for scientists, researchers, students, academicians, farmers and all other innovators in every sector of work. About 1,700 nominations were received from 28 states and six union territories, different universities and laboratories from across the country. Amongst these only 43 awardees and appreciations were chosen by a jury of 150 eminent professors.
