Since February, there has been no running water but the authorities are demanding to pay the dues and saying that if not paid the connections would be removed or cancelled and also they would penalised. Before the formation of Nagar Panchayat, the tap bill was Rs 30 per month, but after the setting up of the same, the tap tax revised as Rs 70 per month.

In a glaring example of official tomfoolery, the natives of Vidyanagar which is under the limits of Huzurabad Nagar Panchayat are getting demand notices (tap tax bills) instead of tap water. There is no running water in the colony but the Nagar Panchayat authorities are issuing demand notices for pending half yearly dues of April to September-2016.

The tax was revised according to the Municipal Act by the Nagar Panchayat. Though Nagar Panchayat was formed, the duties and functions of the same remained as of Gram Panchayat. The authorities should first supply the water, and then only they have to collect taxes. Last summer, the colony faced acute shortage of water.

The entire colony is connected to the Panchayat overhead tanks, but the authorities are not supplying water to the people to meet their needs. Even during the recent monsoon season, they did not get sufficient water. The local authorities and also chairman and councilors are turning a deaf ear to the problem.

Even though, Vidyanagar is located on the banks of the SRSP canal, the people of the colony are deprived of drinking water. The ground levels of water are about 1,500 ft to 3,000 ft, so every household is having the problem for so many decades.

Vidyanagar is one of the most beautiful colonies around, having educational institutions in Huzurabad, but unfortunately it does not have water facility. Several people from the surrounding mandals are residing in the colony for their children’s studies for a long time. But they are facing water problem.

The minimum basic need is water, without water we cannot live. So many people vacated their rented houses due to water problem. People are demanding that the Nagar Panchayat authorities and people’s representatives give much priority to running water, otherwise we will not pay taxes and also agitate for the water issue.

The chairman and councillors have to concentrate first on providing minimum basic need of water, and then only they should focus on widening of roads, formation of CC roads and beatification of the town.Satyam Konda,Huzurabad
