Warangal: Commotion prevailed at National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal as an M Tech student has allegedly committed suicide on the campus during morning hours of Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Amit Kumr (24) from Nawada district in Bihar, was studying M Tech (EEE-power systems). He reportedly hanged himself to ceiling fan at his A-8-27 hostel room at Ultra Mega Hostel on the campus.

He completed his first year and was about to enter second year of the course. It was said that there were a couple of backlogs in the first semester of the first year, while he cleared all the subjects in the second semester.

According to Kazipet circle inspector (CI) Ch Ajay, the police received information about the incident at around 11 am on Tuesday from the institute authorities. The student might have committed suicide between 9 am to 11 am after having breakfast in the morning.

The mobile call record was verified and it was found that he had called his parents 10 times yesterday. On Tuesday morning he did not respond to a call made by his parents and the parents, who grew suspicious, called one of his friends.

When he went to the hostel room, it was locked from inside and then he peeped into the room through the window and found Amit Kumar hanging from the ceiling. He immediately alerted the chief warden Venu Vinod, who accompanied by Dean (Students Affairs) Prof L Ramgopal Reddy, police and institute doctors rushed to the hostel room and broke the door open and found the student dead.

While the police were suspecting that academic stress could be the reason for the students’ extreme act, the institute authorities felt that it might not be the reason as he did well in his first year second semester examinations. “The exact cause for his action is yet to be ascertained,” an official of NITW said.

CI Ajay informed that they could not find any suicide note in the hostel room. The body was shifted to MGM Hospital. Amit Kumar’s father Shanker Prasad was informed about the incident and his family members were expected to arrive here on Wednesday morning.
