Hyderabad: Higher education is not merely a step towards development but as a matter of fact it is development in itself and Universities are the places to promote human values, humanity and tolerance. Prof. Mohd. Muzammil, Former Vice Chancellor of Agra & Rohilkhand Universities and Professor, Dept. of Economics, Lucknow University expressed these views today at Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU). He was delivering a lecture “Delights in Higher Education: Arts & Science” to mark the 21st Foundation Day celebrations of MANUU at Saiyid Hamid Library Auditorium.

Dr. Mohammad Aslam Parvaiz, Vice-Chancellor, presided over.

Prof. Muzammil, a post doctoral fellow from Oxford in Economics, said that universities need to focus on purifying the minds and souls also, while contributing to control environmental pollution. Higher education does not merely means employability, these citadels of higher learning shall also play a role in nurturing highest human values and ideas.

Dwelling on the topic of his lecture, Prof. Muzammil said that higher education plays an important role in the social upliftment by making the life enjoyable. He singled out Arts as a tool to make the life happier. It even makes the human being handsome and enjoyable, he claimed.

Speaking about the relation between Arts and Science, he said that new knowledge leads to new technology and Arts helps in creating a conducive ambience for its implementation. Arts, Social Sciences and Literature play an important role in carrying forward the fruits of new inventions and innovations. He described higher education as a social good, as the number of highly educated people increases its value will also enhance. Every day is today and every today is a new day. Prof. Muzammil regarded research as the reaction of mind towards the knowledge.

Dr. Mohammad Aslam Parvaiz, in his presidential remarks, praised the lecture as thought provoking and memorable. He agreed with the view that Universities also need to address the pollution in our minds, morality and character. University requires concerted efforts from all stake holders in this direction.

Earlier, Dr. M. A. Sikandar, Registrar welcomed the gathering and introduced the guest speaker. He also presented a brief report about the University.

Anis Azmi, Chief Consultant, CUCS conducted the proceedings. Abid Abdul Wasay, P.R.O. proposed the vote of thanks. Scores of students, research scholars, professors and staff members attended.
