New Delhi: The Congress-led UPA government on Friday informed the Supreme Court that it is not investigating Snoopgate, involving surveillance and spying on a woman in Gujarat.

The issue was controversial, as two portals came up with a sting operation of what it called audio-tapes of the conversations between the then Gujarat Minister of State for Home Amit Shah and top Gujarat police official G L Singhal that had reference to “Saheb,” which reportedly referred to BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. The woman, who is an architect, and her father, petitioned the Supreme Court against the investigations by the Centre and the Gujarat Government over the issue. After the Centre's assertion that it will not investigate the snoopgate, Gujarat Government-ordered probe alone remains. The Supreme Court advised the father of the girl to approach the Gujarat High Court on the issue of opposing the Gujarat Government probe into the issue. It what is seen as an advantage to the BJP and BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, the woman told the Supreme Court that she is “thankful” that the Gujarat police was assigned to tail her.
