Allies, Oppn put BJP on back foot over controversial law
New Delhi: With the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government facing pressure from its own allies __ Shiv Sena, Akali Dal and Lok Janshakti Party __ and from Opposition, especially the Congress on the controversial Land Bill, the government went on a back foot by drafting senior ministers to talk to parties across the spectrum to have a smooth sailing in Parliament.
The Opposition kept up its pressure by walking out of Lok Sabha while Congress hit the streets in Delhi opposing the Land Bill and threatened to take the protests across the country. It was a pleasant surprise to see a host of Congress leaders from the two Telugu-speaking States – Andhra Pradesh and Telangana along with national leaders like Jairam Ramesh, Ajay Maken, Digvijay Singh, Raj Babbar, Deepender Hooda and Jyotiraditya Scindia.
Among them include, PCC chiefs, Raghuveera Reddy and Ponnala Lakshmaiah, V Hanumantha Rao, Sailajanath among host of other Congress leaders. After Shiv Sena and Akali Dal, the LJSP headed by Ram Vilas Paswan which is part of Modi Government voiced concerns over some of the provisions of the law. Party MP Chirag Paswan said, "There are questions about the need of doing away with farmers' consent. They will have no right to move court," he told reporters.
Two senior ministers gave enough indications that the Centre was ready to deliberate on opposition suggestions and go extra mile to prevent any injustice to farmers. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu said in Lok Sabha," We will not let any injustice happen to farmers. We are ready to go the extra miles to strengthen the hands of farmers." Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari told media that the Government was open to accepting good suggestions offered by other parties. Akali Dal leaders, including Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal will be in the capital on Thursday to discuss the issue within and finalise its strategy.
