Wuhan : Rio Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu won her first round match, but London Games bronze medallist, Saina Nehwal, lost a hard-fought battle and crashed out of the Asian Championship on Wednesday.Sindhu won her match against Indonesia's Dinar Dyah Ayustine 21-8, 21-18.Saina lost to Japan's Sayaka Sato in a three-game tie. Saina won the first game 21-19 but went on to lose the second and third game 16-21, 18-21.

This is the second time the Japanese shuttler has been able to defeat Saina. Saina has defeated Sato six times before this. The Indian defeated Sato last in November 2016 in the Hong Kong Open Superseries.Ajay Jayaram won his match against China's Houwei Tian. Jayaram won the first game 21-18 but lost the second 18-21. However, the Indian fought back to claim the third game and match 21-19.

In the other men's singles match, H. S. Prannoy lost his match against Hong Kong's Ka Long Angus Ng. Prannoy lost the first game 21- 16 but won the second game 21-13. But, he couldn't hold on and went on to lose the third and decisive game 19-21. In the mixed doubles event, Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Sikki N Reddy lost to Chinese top seeds Siwei Zheng and Qingchen Chen 15-21, 21-14, 16-21, getting knocked out in 50 minutes.

In women’s doubles, Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold finalists Ashwini Ponnappa and N. Sikki Reddy lost 20-22, 16-21 to Korean combo of Chae Yoo Jung and Kim So Yeong in a 37-minute clash. In men’s doubles, Rio Olympians Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy suffered 9-21, 18-21 to Chinese pair of Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan.
