All those looking forward to the next iteration of the Apple TV might face a slight disappointment. The next generation will reportedly not support 4K video streaming for the upcoming set-top box which offers a superior viewing experience. The new device which was slatted to offer a wide range of features, will miss out the high-definition 4K capabilities, even though there are several services such as Netflix and Amazon which offer content in this format.

A source familiar with Apple’s thinking has said that, “4K is great, but it’s still in its infancy”. The report also pointed out that 4K streaming at a large scale turns out to be pretty expensive. Apart from this, 4K video also requires a lot of bandwidth along with more powerful compression technologies to transmit it expediently. This technology requires speedy consumer broadband connections and as of now, the number of 4K-capable households is yet petty.

As Apple is known to take it slow whilst adopting new technology, it isn’t very hard to see why Apple might opt out of including 4K capabilities in its upcoming Apple TV. An earlier report stated that the Apple TV will be unveiled at WWDC in June, this year. Along with a design change, the Apple TV box is expected to come with the company’s latest A8 system-on-chip or something similar, more on-board storage and an improved operating system that could support voice assistant Siri. Currently, Apple TV supports apps but they are automatically added to the device. The new update will also bring an App Store for the Apple TV, just like we have seen for iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad.
