Country’s leading carmaker Maruti Suzuki first tried its hands in the MPV segment with the Ertiga. Being a promising product offering immense value, the Ertiga went on to bring very good volumes for the brand. Every MPV maker in India craves for the numero uno position grabbed by Toyota. However, entry of the Innova Crysta, successor to the old Innova, has resulted in a huge gap in the Rs 12-16 lakh price bracket which Maruti plans to fill with the next generation Ertiga.

Spy shots of the 2018 Maruti Ertiga have surfaced in which the camouflaged vehicle can be seen testing somewhere on the Greater Noida expressway. While the size of the car in question is one level above the current Ertiga, its overall silhouette remains like that of a typical MPV. Large greenhouse and the fluid bodyline hints at its pleasing and neutral styling. While fog lamps and the rear wiper are some of the notable elements, the test mule is also clad with wheel covers of a radical design.

In its current form, the Maruti Ertiga is powered by a set of 1.4-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel engines, of which the former comes with a four-speed automatic transmission option as well. The upcoming model could utilise the same engines in a more powerful state of tune, while the possibility of being powered by new in-house developed engines cannot be ruled out. Conventional automatic transmission is most likely to be replaced by a 5-speed AMT unit in the upcoming car.

Maruti Suzuki seems to be addressing the Ertiga’s space constraint with this one which is evident from the long rear overhang. The 5+2 seater Ertiga is priced in the range of Rs 6.55-10.68 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai) and can also be had with a factory-fitted CNG kit. The company will definitely need to differentiate the new MPV strongly since the public preference is to have more amount in the bank than few inches of extra cabin space!
The Ertiga was launched in 2012 and we can very well expect Maruti to unveil the second generation model at the upcoming 2018 Auto Expo.
