Within three days after commencing this exercise on September 19, officials were successful in locating over thirty thousand-odd water bodies in every nook and corner of the State.

Hyderabad: The survey of tanks and lakes undertaken by irrigation department in ten districts of Telangana State is almost complete. Within three days after commencing this exercise on September 19, officials were successful in locating over thirty thousand-odd water bodies in every nook and corner of the State.
The TRS government has given a high priority for development of minor irrigation in Telangana region, which it feels was completely neglected by previous governments. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao directed irrigation department to undertake a survey and submit a detailed report on water bodies in each district, right from each village level. Accordingly, over 2,000 engineers assisted by revenue department officials conducted the survey on water bodies.
Field officials were given previous survey data conducted in 2005 by Panchayat Raj department, which listed around 36,000 tanks and lakes in Telangana region including 5,000 irrigation tanks under the control of irrigation department.
Based on this data, till last reports arrived the officials collected details over 41,131 water bodies including – Warangal 4,268, Khammam-2,751, Karimnagar-5,503, Nizamabad-1,988, Nalgonda-4,632, Mahabubnagar-6,055, Ranga Reddy-2,700, Medak-6,400 and Adilabad-6,652.
The officials also collected details of water bodies in reserve forest and tanks prepared by private individuals. According to a senior official, after submitting the survey report, the Chief Minister would order - restoration of water bodies by fencing, undertaking de-silting process where required and action against encroachers.
It may be mentioned here that KCR was to chair a meeting on this issue on September 22, which was postponed to September 25.
