Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Monday agreed to the demand of the Congress party for the release of a white paper on the status of power production and consumption in the new State.
Intervening in a short duration debate taken up under Rule 344 on the power situation in Telangana, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao announced that a white paper on the power situation in the new State will be released soon. A demand to this effect was made by Opposition leader K Jana Reddy.
Taking part in the debate, Jana Reddy dwelled on the necessity of a white paper so that “the bad blood between the people of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh is abated”.
Jana Reddy wanted the Centre to appoint an ombudsman to ensure proper distribution of power between the two States in the prescribed ratio of 54:46 as laid down in the AP Reorganisation Act. He suggested that officials of both the States be stationed at all the power plants in order to monitor the production.
“If Telangana State fails to get 54 per cent as per the Act, the AP government must compensate for the same. And if the AP government fails to do so, we shall take up a movement to get our rightful share,” he said.
Jana Reddy further took jibes at KCR for promising that he would raise the power production capacity of Telangana to 20,000 MW in the next five years. Instead of pursuing impossible goals, Jana suggested the TRS government to focus on finishing the power projects which were in different stages of completion. “If the Telangana government ensures the completion of ongoing projects like Bhupalpalli, Ramagundam and Kothagudem, 8,000 MW of power capacity will become available and the State will become power surplus,” Jana said.
Clarifying the reason behind entering into an MoU with the Chhattisgarh government for supply of 1,000 MW, KCR said, “The MoU was signed so that a power purchase agreement (PPA) could follow.”
KCR informed the House that the State government has allotted 60 acres of land to Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) for an ultra mega transmission line of 4,500 MW between Dichpalli and Maheshwaram. The Wardha-Dichpalli line will make the connectivity of northern and southern grids a reality. The construction of the line was delayed due to setting up 20 towers on fire by Naxalites in Maharashtra, according to KCR.
KCR accused AP Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu of not heeding the advice of Godavari Water Management Board and the AP Electricity Regulatory Authority (APERC) with regard to release of water and power. The Telangana government will approach courts and pursue the matter legally.
