Hyderabad: A day after a pregnant woman, Satyavani, drowned in an open nala in the city on Wednesday, the GHMC announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh and a criminal case under section 304 A (death caused due to negligence) was registered by Gopalpuram police, on the complaint of her husband and relatives. GHMC also suspended two officials for alleged negligence leading to the tragedy. However, following pressure from the unions, the Corporation is contemplating to revoke the suspensions.

Earlier, Satyaveni's husband Premraj and relatives staged a dharna at the Gandhi Hospital mortuary where her post-mortem was conducted. They raised slogans against the GHMC Commissioner and demanded action against the officials whose negligence led to Satyaveni's death. GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar said the GHMC proposes to take up nala works to the extent of 300 km in a phased manner, taking up one stretch at a time.
