Hyderabad: A gas pipeline of the Reliance Gas Transportation Infrastructure Ltd (RGTIL) carrying gas from Kakinada in East Godavari to Bharuch in Gujarat passing through Medak district cracked, causing huge gas leak and subsequent fire at Maddigunta village near Zaheerabad early on Monday.

“The gas started leaking at about 2.35 am and within no time it caught fire and it was visible in the camera. Our people reached the spot within 45 minutes after the incident and swung into action. However, we do not know the reason for the fire. Experts from Mumbai will arrive here and ascertain the reasons,” according to G V Reddy, General Manager, Reliance.

Soon after the fire broke out, a security guard of the company alerted the police. By the time the police were getting ready to reach the spot, they also got an alert from the head office of the company from Mumbai about incident. Immediately, power supply to the village was stopped by the officials.

“Officials from Mumbai alerted the local police after they got an alert. They have a centralised alarm system, which helped them to get the alert. A police team immediately reached the spot and evacuated the SC Colony situated near the pipeline,” said Medak SP Sumathi. She added that around 150 people must have been moved to the nearest village.

Three fire tenders came to the spot for fighting. However, use of water and foam did not help extinguishing the fire for hours. A special maintenance team from RGTIL came and stopped the gas flow by closing two valves situated at Zaheerabad and Patancheru to reduce the pressure.

After six-hour-long effort, fire-fighters, Reliance special team and police managed to control the fire and gas. Medak police said nobody was hurt in the incident. As a precautionary measure, the technical experts opened two valves - MLV 13 at Indresam near Patancheru and MLV 15 at Madhira at Kohir- and released the gas that was in the pipeline for about 70 km and averted the fire from spreading. Locals returned to their houses, only after the fire was brought under control. District Collector Rahul Bojja and Superintendent of Police B Sumathi visited the spot.
