Singareni Collieries has bagged the coveted Golden Peacock Innovative Product / Service Award for 2015 for “processed Overburden for utilization as stowing and construction material”.
The award will be presented by Sheik Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Social Development, Govt. of UAE in the Golden Peacock Night Function to be held in Dubai on 20-04-2015.
Large amount of Overburden (waste earth material) is generated while extracting coal in opencast mining. The top soil of 30 to 40 cm having nutrients will be separately stock piled for re-using / spreading on the back filled areas for sustaining natural vegetation / plantation etc.
Hence, an innovative initiative has been taken for processing Overburden material for generating material equivalent to sand for “stowing and construction” and started processing Overburden Plant at Bhupalpally in 2010. The processed material is suitable for civil constructions and passed the method test IS: 2386-1963 and is being used for stowing in underground mines by SCCL replacing river sand.
The recovery of the processed overburden at BHPL is 60%. So far 3.5 lakh cu.m of processed Overburden has been used in the underground mines. This has been subjected to detailed quality test by the JNTU, Hyderabad and certified that further processing will yield the material which can be used in load bearing structures also. The SCCL is proposing 6 more such plants with a total capacity of 21 lakh cu.m per annum.
Successful use of processed overburden in mining and constructions will provide alternative to river sand considering large amounts of Overburden dumps at various mine sites in the Country.
Golden Peacock Award Jury under the Chairmanship of Justice(Dr.)Arijit Pasayat, former Judge, Supreme Court of India has selected SCCL for developing this innovative product which can be readily used in the field and has been certified as a green initiative by the collieries.
SCCL was earlier awarded Golden Peacock Environment Management Award (GPEMA) for attaining significant achievements in the field of Environment Management in the year 2004.
