Come May 1, the strength of Telangana Legislative Council will come down by more than half to 17 of its installed capacity of 40 with retirement of 19 and 4 vacancies to be filled up post AP Reorganization Act.


Post bifurcation, of the 40 seats, only 33 members were allotted to the Telangana Council. Three more members were elected from Graduates and Teachers constituencies taking the strength to 36. On March 29, term of 10 MLCs ended and on May 1 tenure of seven more MLCs comes to an end.


However, Schedule third and fourth of the Act mentions different numbers for the State Upper House. Fourth Schedule says that there will be 15 members from MLAs quota, 10 from LAC, three each from Graduates and Teachers constituencies besides six nominated members. In fact, there should be 14 members from LAC after creating three new seats.
