Hyderabad: From the next academic year, all the State universities and colleges in the Telangana State have to implement the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). A decision to this effect was taken during a meeting with university’s officials and State Council of Higher Education, here on Thursday.

The officials have also decided to implement the semester-wise system in all the undergraduate courses in the State. Earlier, all undergraduate courses followed the annual system. As it is a mandate from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the universities have decided to implement CBCS which gives an opportunity for the students to pick up courses from other faculties and department as part of interdisciplinary paper during the course.

The university’s officials decided to follow the new system in the existing frame work. The officials of State Council of Higher Education have directed the universities to identify a college in each district which will work as nodal college for implementation of the new system.

The officials of the State Council of Higher Education said the council would impress upon the government to take up the recruitment in the universities and government colleges for effective implementation of CBCS. Meanwhile, the State Council of Higher Education had appealed the University Grants Commission (UGC) to retain the existing credits for the languages in the CBCS for undergraduate courses. However, the State Council is yet to receive a formal letter from the UGC. It may be noted that UGC issued a curricular to all the universities stating that there would not be credits for the languages for undergraduate courses.
