Hyderabad: The bottlenecks for Pranahita-Chevella project, which is getting delayed due to interstate dispute with Maharashtra for the last eight years, are set to be cleared once and for all. The Telangana government has decided to make slight modifications to the existing design and henceforth it would be called as Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme.

Initially, this project was designed to irrigate 16.4 lakh acres in the water scarcity areas of Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Medak, and Ranga Reddy districts. However to overcome objections from Maharashtra, the Telangana government has decided to construct a barrage near Kaleshwaram instead of Tummidihat of Adilabad district.

As per the earlier design, some parts of Maharashtra were to be submerged and therefore the neighbouring State was severely opposing it. Though technical experts earlier predicted 160 tmc ft of water could be diverted if barrage was constructed in Adilabad, the Central Water Commission clarified that maximum diversion possible was only 140 tmc ft.

The Telangana government, which undertook reengineering of different irrigation projects, took these two issues into consideration and now decided to build barrage in Karimnagar district. The water from this barrage will be transferred into the reservoir of Yellampally project already constructed across the Godavari, before being released to intended areas, including Medak and Hyderabad (30tmc ft) for drinking water purpose.

According to Irrigation department officials, national status would be sought for Kaleshwaram Lift scheme as usual since this is the same Pranahita-Chevella project with a slight modification. Although Adilabad district is missing out due to this change, government has entrusted consultants to study how water could be diverted to canals already built in the district. Farmers and public should not have any apprehensions regarding this.
