Hyderabad: Gandhi Hospital, one of the major government hospitals in the State, is facing difficult situation on account of lack of proper life-saving equipment like ventilators and shortage of technical staff to operate the apparatus. The Swine Flu Nodal Centre in the hospital is not in a position to handle even 20 patients at a time.

Despite adequate medicines, the centre devoid of infrastructure and manpower is unable to attend to patients. According to Dr G Venkateswarlu, Superintendent of Gandhi Hospital, the centre required 50 ventilators, 10 critical care specialist doctors, 30 respiratory technicians and nursing staff, paramedical and other supporting staff to take care of patients round-the-clock.

The centre has just five ventilators which too were obsolete, he said. Two women in the hospital died in a span of six days. The incident highlighted the apathy on the part of authorities in maintaining the preparedness to deal with possible outbreak of swine flu.Dr Venkateswarulu told The Hans India that there was no response from the government though he had addressed a letter to the authorities four months ago drawing their attention to the requirement of equipment.

He sent a reminder too, but of no avail. According to a doctor, the swine flu patients need supervision of critical care specialists to administer more effective treatment. Even though since November 2014 to April around 80 deaths occurred and about 2,500 positive cases reported, no steps were taken to provide apparatus.

The Institute of Preventive Medicine is receiving 20 blood samples from Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh every day for testing for swine flu. It takes at least four hours to test each blood sample. If the institute is swamped with 200 samples a day, it would take nearly 15 days for it to complete the process. This highlighted the need to increase the strength of personnel at the institute to ensure that more blood samples are tested within a short time.
