- National Highway Authority of India accuses Larsen and Toubro of going back on its obligation to make available 3,000 crore for building flyovers
- It is proposed to construct flyovers at some stretches where the national highway becomes narrow because of elevated railroad
Hyderabad: The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has given a jolt to the L&T (Larsen and Toubro) for failing to fulfil its obligation to make available Rs 3,000 crore to build flyovers at some stretches in Hyderabad.
The L & T, the concessioner of the Metro Rail, according to the officials of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), the Hyderabad Metro Railway Limited (HMRL) has agreed to provide funds - Rs 3,000 crore – to the NHAI to build flyovers at some stretches wherever the six-lane highways becomes narrow because of elevated Metro Rail corridor.
The piers raised for elevated Metro Rail has narrowed the highway at many places. The NHAI has identified Kukatpally, Usha Mullapudi, SR Nagar, Khairatabad, Kothapet and LB Nagar junctions through which national highway 65 is passing as “most congested highways.” It is also proposed to construct a flyover at Uppal stretch through which the NH -163 is passing connecting Hyderabad and Warangal.
The NHAI has proposed the flyovers on the highways to ensure that there are no traffic snarls and facilitate smooth vehicular traffic after the metro rail operations begins.
The NHAI officials said that the issue had been brought to the notice of the L&T Company and HMRL time and again, but to avail. The NHAI took the matter seriously as it considered the letter from the L & T, asserting that there was no need for flyovers on the highways.
The officials recalled that the HMRL had agreed to release funds for the construction of four flyovers at meeting attended by Sunil Sharma and HMRL Managing Director N V S Reddy recently. But the L & T had changed its tune.
The NHAI authorities also sought the intervention of Principal Secretary to Roads and Buildings Sunil Sharma and Roads and Buildings Minister T Nageshwara Rao to resolve the issue. The government is likely to call a meeting with all the parties concerned to address the issue.
